Log and Trace Analyzer
The Log and Trace Analyzer combines the features of the Logging tool (also known as Log Analyzer) and the Profiling tool.
The Logging tool enables you to import various log files as well as symptom databases against which log files can be analyzed and correlated. This tool maps the currently supported log format into a common event model called Common Base Event.
The Profiling tool, in particular, provides the ability to profile your applications, to work with profiling resources, and to interact with the applications you are profiling.See the related references for more information on the Logging and Profiling tools and the Common Base Event model.
Enhanced functionality
Besides the base implementation of sequential and associative correlation that is provided by the Logging tools, the Log and Trace Analyzer also provides the ability to combine several log files into a single log for analysis, so these methods can also be used to analyze information in multiple log files, assuming they are combined into a single file for analysis. The Log and Trace Analyzer, as part of the base implementation, enables you to perform the following tasks:
- correlate events in multiple log files
- import, display, and analyze multiple log files
- display the set of imported log files in a summary view that shows the relationships between events in the logs
- plug in and select correlation methods that determine those relationships
There are exceptions where a correlation plug-in has the ability to correlate data from more than two logs, but this usually requires that all of the logs capture the same correlation data. This results in the following possibilities:
- The availability of multiple correlation plug-ins (that is, types of correlation) between two products.
- When analyzing problems involving multiple products, you may need to use different types of correlation to relate information from each pair of products (for example, time stamp correlation between an application and WebSphereR Application Server and URL correlation between WebSphere Application Server and IBMR HTTP Server).
The enhanced functionality of the Log and Trace Analyzer also makes the following tasks possible:
- Importing IBMR log files
- Importing Logging Utilities XML log files
- Profiling applications using WebSphereR Application Server
- Profiling applications using WebSphere test environment
- Profiling applications on WebSphere Application Server using the J2EE Request Profiler
