Local versus remote

Local migration

Local migration without coexistence

Both source and target WebSphere Portal installations are on the same system. Resource conflicts are minimal. We can use the same directory structure to hold logs and backups. Because source and target portals will not be running in parallel, no worries about port conflicts.

Local migration with coexistence

Run the original and newly migrated portal servers on the same system at the same time. Allows for maintaining your current production environment online while performing the migration to a newer version of WebSphere Portal. Consider the hardware and software resource requirements. Plan to avoid port conflicts. Review port assignments.

Remote migration

No port conflicts. Some procedures create files on the source environment need to be copied over to the new installation.
