Documentation improvements and changes

WebSphere Portal 7 includes more documentation improvements based on feedback from customers. Our most exciting change is our transition to publishing the documentation in the WebSphere Portal Family wiki.

Wiki

The wiki offers advantages to the information center. You can comment on or edit topics when you detect an issue or see room for improvement. In the past, you have been able to submit feedback forms to IBM. Many customers have taken the time to submit those forms, providing excellent feedback. As a result, the documentation has been updated and improved. The new wiki delivery format means that other customers benefit from that feedback faster.

Anyone can browse the documentation on the wiki. However to edit or comment on the content, log on to the wiki using a Lotus developerWorks ID. If you already have a Lotus developerWorks ID, are ready to log on and add comments or edit. If you do not have a Lotus developerWorks ID, you can quickly register and get started.

The screen capture highlights features you should know about when using the documentation.

Number Description
1 The breadcrumb helps you orient yourself and quickly know which documentation you are reading.
2 Advanced Search opens a new screen where you can limit search to a specific category. For example, you can limit search to only topics in the IBM WebSphere Portal Express 7 Documentation. You can select multiple categories or a single category. Use advanced search to find exact phrases, search titles only, look for whole words only, and take advantage of Boolean expressions in search. After you search for a term or phrase, you can modify selections and parameters and further refine search results.
3 The Translate page feature uses machine translation to translate all the content on the fly. Unlike many machine translation servers, this translation server uses crowd sourcing. If you detect an inaccurate, awkward, or confusing translation, you can correct it. Your correction is added to the translation server and will be used for the next time the content is translated.
4 IBM still provide quality translated content. Access documentation translated by IBM translation centers using the IBM Translated Documentation section of the navigation.
5 Use these links to quickly see the original version of the topic you are looking at.
6 Highlighting in the navigation helps you know where the current topic is in relation to other topics in the content.

Organization

The navigation for WebSphere Portal 7 Documentation is based on task orientation to help you find content faster. This new navigation model is more in line with other IBM products. Notice the standard sections in the navigation such as Installing, Developing, and Troubleshooting. Additional navigation headings were added, such as Security, Monitoring, and Setting up a portal site.

WKPLC properties

Descriptions, examples, and default values for properties have been added back to the documentation. Find properties file documentation.

Lotus Web Content Management

To set up a site that relies heavily on Web Content Management, see the IBM Lotus Web Content Management documentation. This new documentation set combines what know about WebSphere Portal and Lotus Web Content Management to set up a site.

Re: Documentation improvements and changes: wp7

One feature I don't see, and liked about InfoCenters, is the table of contents on the left-hand side does not collapse when I select the topic to read on the right-hand side. I am continually resizing the left-hand table of contents and selecting topics. Can you make that operate similar to the InfoCenter?

Also, there is not a 'locate' button for the table of contents like in the InfoCenter. I use that feature frequently. Can you add that function into the wiki as well?
