Configure external search scopes

Configure the external search scope defines what the site user will see in the search drop down. This task configures an external search scope that returns search results in an new window or tab. The search results to show up in the search center portlet, then configure the external search results portlet.

The site users search term or phrase is that is typed in the search bar will be appended to the search URL string. Therefore it is important to rearrange search request parameters to make sure the user's query string parameter is positioned last in the string.

  1. From the administration portlet click Manage Search -> Search Scopes -> New Custom Link.

  2. Specify a name to show up in the scope pull down. This is the name site users will see.

  3. Specify a search URL to use.

      For example, you could use one of the following URLs:

        Google: http://www.google.com/search?&q=

        Yahoo: http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=

  4. Optional. You can also include an icon for the search scope.

Here is a screen capture of search options. In this example Google was defined as the external search scope and no icon was used.
