IBM Web Content Manager new features and improvements
Web Content Manager version 7.0 includes new features such as folders and projects, and various improvements to existing features.
Content authoring improvements
The authoring portlet has been updated to improve usability and make it easier to navigate and find items. Improvements include:
- a fresh new look and feel
- the ability to store favorite items and locations
- an improved recent items view
- the ability to view items from all libraries
- improved globalization features
See Work with the authoring portlet for further information.
Organize work using folders
You can now organize design work by creating folders within the authoring template, presentation template, and component views of the authoring portlet. Using folders allows you to organize these item types into logical groupings to make it easier to find items when you need them.
File resource based content items
Authoring templates can now be configured to store file resources as content items. This is useful when you want to store a file, such as a PDF file, and render it directly on a page but would also like to have the PDF file listed in navigational components such as menus and navigators.
Taxonomy based option selection elements
Option selection elements can now be populated with categories from an existing taxonomy. The categories selected in option selection elements can also be used to profile content items. This enables you to add multiple option selection elements to an authoring template to make the process of profiling a content item easier for content creators.
Improved Web content tag support
The format of Web content tags has been changed to use square brackets for easier readability and better integration into rich text fields. New "tag helper" functions have been added to the authoring portlet to make it simpler to add Web content tags to HTML designs.
Enhanced change management features
The change management features of Web Content Manager have been extended to include:
- the ability to create multiple drafts of a single item
- the ability to create drafts without the need for a workflow
- improved workflow controls including date and time offsets of workflow actions
- bi-directional workflow controls
See Work with draft items for further information.
Collaborative content management using projects
You can now create, edit, workflow, preview, and syndicate changes to multiple items within a project. When all items in a project are ready to be published, you can publish them together in a single operation.See Work with projects for further information.
Improved JSR 286 Web content viewers
The JSR 286 Web content viewer used for rendering local and remote Web content has been enhanced:
- Support for friendly URLs for Web content. Friendly URLs for Web content are a convenient way for users to create bookmarks to content items or for external applications to provide links directly to content items in the portal.
- Automated migration from the deprecated traditional Web content viewer to the JSR 286 Web content viewer.
- Support for tagging and rating.
See Delivering web content for further information.
Web content page enhancements
Web content pages now provide the following additional features:
- Improved performance through page-based access control, which delegates access control of content items displayed on the Web content page to the page itself. When page-based access control is enabled for a Web content page, a user who is authorized to view the page is also automatically authorized to view the content associated with the page.
- Robust content mapping support that can be managed and automated through tools such as the XML configuration interface, the Portal Scripting Interface, and the REST API for content mappings.
See Work with web content pages for further information.
Easier configuration
The process of configuring Web content environments has been improved through the use of the WAS resource environment provider so you can edit Web Content Manager system properties using the WAS administration console.
Improved serviceability
The logging and tracing features of Web Content Manager have been improved to enable problem determination without the need to install specific debugging modules from IBM support. This support includes the use of the WAS public APIs for FFDC logging.
Java messaging service support
Web Content Manager provides support for the notification of events such as item state changes or services starting and stopping. These notifications can be delivered as messages to the Java messaging service.See Enable Java messaging services for web content for further information.
