In a horizontal cluster, nodes are distributed across multiple servers. WAS ND is the primary place for maintaining and configuring the cluster.

Ideally the production configuration will not include a single point of failover.

High availability is also critical for networks with high traffic loads.

In the topology diagram, each server in the cluster has WebSphere Portal and WAS installed. The database and LDAP servers are on individual remote servers that each node in the cluster can access.

The HTTP server is on another server.
