Migration is the process of collecting configuration data and applications from an earlier installed version of IBM WebSphere Portal and merging them into a newer installed version, so that the new environment is identical to the earlier environment. The newer version can be on either the same machine as the earlier version, or on a different (remote) machine.

Migration is different from upgrading. With upgrading, you replace an existing installed version's out-of-date files with current files. With migration, you install the new version of a product alongside of the earlier version (either on the same machine or on a different machine) and then copy data from the earlier version to the new version.

Migrating information from the earlier version to the new version lets you use that information in the new version without having to recreate it from scratch. Migration also lets you carry forward customizations that were implemented in the earlier portal, so that you can continue to use those customizations in the new portal.

You can migrate information to WebSphere Portal V6.1 from the earlier offerings listed below. If you are not sure which product version you have installed, execute...

WPVersionInfo.sh

Full support for migration from WebSphere Portal version 6.0.1.x to 6.1 is not immediately available and will be provided pending final approval and release by IBM Quality Engineering. Instructions for migrating from version 6.0.1.x are therefore subject to change and will be revised as needed. For updated announcements regarding migration from Websphere Portal version 6.0.1.x, check the page Migration Central for WebSphere Portal and WCM .

Migration is supported from a secure server only, and between the same product families (Express, Express Plus, Enable, Extend), and from Express to Enable, Express Plus to Extend, Express to Extend, and Enable to Extend.

Migration is not supported from WebSphere Portal Express or Express Plus V5.0.2.2 or 5.0.2.3 on Linux.

WebSphere Portal automatically migrates the following applications and configuration data so that the new portal looks and behaves the same way as the earlier portal:

Migration does not upgrade these elements to use features that are available in the new version. Taking advantage of new functionality that was not available in the earlier portal requires additional attention after migration is complete.

WebSphere Portal also supports integration with additional products to extend core functionality. If the earlier portal environment is configured to work with one or more supported products that provided integrated features, follow the migration procedures for the integrated product.

Unless otherwise noted, portlets and components in the earlier version are typically not migrated if they are not available in the version to which you are migrating. Examples include the MarketWatch portlets, Domino Document Manager portlet, Inline QuickPlaces portlet, Microsoft Exchange 2000 portlets, and portlets that were developed using WebSphere Portal Application Integrator (WPAI).
