Notes on installing WebSphere Portal remotely with the graphical interface

Install WebSphere Portal

To install WebSphere Portal, follow the instructions below.

  1. If you are installing from a PC with a firewall enabled, it is recommended that you disable the firewall before beginning installation.

  2. If the WAS subsystem is not started, start it by entering the following command on an OS/400 command line:

    STRSBS SBSD(QEJBAS5/QEJBAS5)
  3. Insert the Setup disc into the CD-ROM drive of the Windows 2000 or Windows XP workstation. If the autostart function is enabled on the PC, the installation program should automatically start. If not, you can manually launch the program by double-clicking the install400.bat file in the root directory of the CD.
  4. A small iSeries signon box will prompt you to enter the iSeries system name, ID, and password. When you have entered that information, click OK.

It is recommended that you end any applications running on the PC before beginning the installation process. If applications remain active, it may be necessary to minimize the windows in order to see the signon screen.

The ID you use to sign on must have *ALLOBJ and *JOBCTL authority.

If you are prompted to change the password because the password has expired or is about to expire, cancel and exit the install program. Log on to the iSeries system using a 5250 session, update the password, and restart the installation program. Do not use the installation's change password prompt, as it could cause the installation to fail.

  5. Select the language for the install and click Next.

  6. The InfoCenter launch screen should appear. Use this screen to launch InfoCenter documentation before beginning installation. Click Next.

  7. Review the license agreement. Select I accept the terms of the licensing agreement and click Next.

  8. A screen displaying the install location should appear. Click Next.

  9. Select Install only or Install and Configure

    Click Next.

If you selected Install only, skip to step 13.

  10. (Install and Configure) Select a WAS instance from the list. If there are no instances to chose from, exit the installation program and refer to Creating an extended WAS instance for instructions on how to create a WAS instance for use with WebSphere Portal. Click Next.

  11. (Install and Configure) Enter a user ID and password for the WebSphere Portal administrator. Do not use blanks in either the user ID or the password, and ensure that the password is at least five characters in length. This user ID is used to access WebSphere Portal with administrator authority after installation. Note that this user ID is only used to log into WebSphere Portal and is not related to any user IDs used to access the operating system itself. If you intend to use a LDAP directory to manage the users, ensure that the administrator user ID you specify here conforms to the recommendations specified in Special characters in user IDs and passwords. Click Next.

  12. (Install and Configure) Enter a user ID and password to be used to create and configure an OS/400 DB2 schema on the iSeries system. WebSphere Portal requires this schema to store portlet and user information. The schema (QWPS50) will be owned by the user ID specified on this screen. This ID must already exist on the iSeries system. Click Next.

  13. Review the information on the installation summary screen and click Next. Throughout installation, the program displays progress messages related to the various components.

Note that if you chose the Install and Configure option, it may take over an hour for the installation and configuration process to complete.

  14. When WebSphere Portal finishes installing, the installation program will display a confirmation panel. Click Finish to exit the installation program.

  15. Return to Installation scenarios to complete the installation process.
