Using D-mode IPL to refresh the vital product data
If you installed or upgraded to a POWER6™ model and are starting the system for the first time, follow these steps to start your system and locate the load source. Before you begin this procedure, be sure that you have completed the necessary hardware planning procedures and that you are familiar with how to set up and operate the Hardware Management Console (HMC). Ensure that your service representative has completed the hardware upgrade installation instructions and that your system is in Standby status. To start your system and locate the load source, follow these steps:
Continue with your installation or hardware upgrade instructions.
- Verify that your i5/OS system console is set up correctly and is ready.
- Ensure that the alternate installation device is set up correctly. For instructions, see Alternate installation device and then return here.
- Make sure that the I_BASE_01 Licensed Internal Code optical media is loaded into the device that is defined for the system.
- On the HMC, in the Navigation area, expand the Systems Management folder.
- In the Navigation area, click Servers. Select the server.
- In the Contents area, select the logical partition that you want to start.
- Select Tasks > Operations > Activate.
- Under activation option, click Manufacturing Default Configuration. For the Keylock position, select Manual. For the IPL type, select D: IPL from the alternate load source (CD or tape) for install.
- Click OK to activate the system. This IPL can take several minutes.
- If you are using the HMC console, open the console window.
- On the HMC, in the Navigation area, expand the Systems Management folder.
- In the Navigation area, click Servers. Select the server.
- In the Contents area, select the logical partition that you want to start.
- Select Tasks > Console window > Open dedicated 5250 console.
- The Select a Language Group display appears.
Select a Language Group The language feature shown is the language feature installed on the system. Attention: To keep the same primary language, ensure that the media you use for installing the operating system matches the language feature shown. If the operating system media does not match what is shown, the installation process will attempt to install the operating system in a different language feature than Licensed Internal Code. This is undesirable. Type choice, press Enter. Language feature . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 2924The language feature 2924 (English) is the default for this display.
The installation media for Licensed Internal Code is now language-independent. It is important that you complete this step carefully.
To change the service tools language to match the primary language, type the language feature that appears on the media that contains the operating system.
Press Enter.
- After you enter the language feature, the Confirm Language Group display appears.
Confirm Language Group Language feature . . . . . . . . . . . . . . : 2924 Press Enter to confirm your choice for language feature. Press F12 to change your choice for language feature.Press Enter.
- The Install Licensed Internal Code display appears.
Install Licensed Internal Code System: XXXX Select one of the following: 1. Install Licensed Internal Code 2. Work with Dedicated Service Tools (DST) 3. Define alternate installation deviceSelect option 2 (Work with Dedicated Service Tools (DST)) and press Enter.
- At the Sign On display, sign on as the security officer (QSECOFR for the service tools user and QSECOFR for the service tools password).
- Select option 2 (Work with Disk Units) and press Enter.
- Select option 8 (Update system vital product data) to identify the location of the load-source disk unit. Press Enter.
- The Update System Vital Product Data display appears. Press Enter to confirm that the vital product data should be written. Press F12 twice. Then press 1 and Enter to exit DST.
- On the HMC, in the Navigation area, expand the Systems Management folder.
- In the Navigation area, click Servers. Select the server.
- In the Contents area, select the logical partition you want to start.
- Select Tasks > Properties.
- Select Setting. Change the IPL source to B and the keylock position to Manual.
- Click OK.
- On the HMC, in the Navigation area, expand the Systems Management folder.
- In the Navigation area, click Servers. Select the server.
- In the Contents area, select the logical partition that you want to start.
- Select Tasks > Operations > Shutdown to power off the logical partition.
- On the Shutdown Partitions window, under Shutdown options, select Delayed. Click OK.
- On the HMC, in the Navigation area, expand the Systems Management folder.
- In the Navigation area, click Servers. Select the server.
- Select Tasks > Operations > Power On.
- Select Partition auto start and click OK.
