Replacing the battery power unit on models 5xx and expansion units FC 507x and FC 508x
To remove or replace the battery power unit on models 5xx, expansion units FC 507x and FC 508x, follow these steps.
The part number for the battery power unit is 86G8040.

- Do not turn off the system.
- Remove the front cover (see 1 in Figure 2).
- Pull out and lift to remove the screen (see 2 in Figure 2).
If you remove the battery power unit while the system is running on battery power, the system will fail. It might also damage the battery power unit and the card enclosure.
- Ensure that the system is not running on battery power. As a test, be sure that the console accepts system commands before removing the battery power unit.
CAUTION:Be careful when removing or installing this part or unit. This part or unit is heavy, but has a weight smaller than 18 kilograms (39.7 pounds). (RSFTC201)- Loosen the screws and use two hands to pull the battery power unit out (see 3 in Figure 2).
- Install the battery power unit by reversing the removal procedure.
CAUTION:The battery is a lead-acid battery. To avoid possible explosion, do not burn. Exchange only with the IBM-approved part. Recycle or discard the battery as instructed by local regulations.In the United States, IBM has a process for the collection of this battery. For information, call 1-800-426-4333. Have the IBM part number for the battery unit available when you call.
