Entering data, update tables, and make inquiries using data file utility

The data file utility (DFU), which is part of the iSeries™ Applications Development Tools package available from IBM®, is a program builder that helps you create programs to enter data, update tables, and make inquiries.

You do not need a programming language to use DFU. Your data entry, maintenance, or inquiry program is created when you respond to a series of displays. An advantage in using DFU is that its generic nature allows you to create a database update program to load data to a table faster than you can by using programming languages, such as SQL. You can work with data on a remote system by using DFU with DDM files, or by using display station pass-through to run DFU at the application server (AS).
