Install and enabling IBM Tivoli License Compliance Manager

IBM Tivoli License Compliance Manager monitors license compliance. Basically, it recognizes and monitors what product offerings and their versions, releases, and fix packs are installed and used on the system.

Before beginning the enabling process, WebSphere Portal Express must be installed. WebSphere Portal Express is configured to work with IBM Tivoli License Compliance Manager.

What is IBM®® Tivoli®® License Compliance Manager?

IBM Tivoli License Compliance Manager monitors what product offerings and their versions, releases, and fix packs are installed, and used, on a system. That allows IBM to communicate updates for products installed in its customer base, and appropriately bill for the product and the amount of usage. It also prevents billing for multiple installations of the same product that is bundled with various IBM software packages.

How does IBM Tivoli License Compliance Manager work?

The product that enables IBM Tivoli License Compliance Manager works in conjunction with it. A product like WebSphere Portal Express that enables IBM Tivoli License Compliance Manager chooses one or more executables that appear on the system when the product is running, and submits the names of those executables (called usage signatures) to IBM Tivoli License Compliance Manager. This happens before a product release. Those signatures predefine its product offering to IBM Tivoli Compliance License Manager. WebSphere Portal Express installs its inventory signature file in the itlm subdirectory of the installation root directory, portal_server_root. Then, once installed and activated, IBM Tivoli License Compliance Manager recognizes the product offering's signatures as it looks for one or more predefined product processes when determining whether the product offering is installed and running. IBM Tivoli License Compliance Manager also identifies the product offering's version, release, and fix pack levels.

When IBM Tivoli License Compliance Manager recognizes a product offering, it allows you to take advantage of IBM's pricing options and product update notifications.

To install and enable IBM Tivoli License Compliance Manager, :

  1. Download the IBM Tivoli License Compliance Manager Version 2.2 agent and install it on each system that requires it. Instructions for downloading the IBM Tivoli License Compliance Manager agent, prerequisites and licensing process are documented on the Passport Advantage Web site.

i5/OS Users: Download and install Fix Pack 2 for IBM Tivoli License Compliance Manager Version 2.2. Link to this software support site to begin the download process.

  2. Security must be enabled to continue with these steps. When security is enabled, credentials need to be provided to IBM Tivoli License Manager as follows. First find the IBM Tivoli License Manager install directory for your operating system:

    • Windows:

      C:WINDOWS\itlm\wasagent

    • Linux:

      /var/itlm/wasagent

    • i5/OS:

      /QIBM/ProdData/QITLM

Next, complete each of these steps:

    1. Run WASAgentClient.{bat|sh}

    2. Type servers on the WASAgentClient console to list all the server IDs and the path where each resides

    3. Provide credentials for your servers by typing:

      credentials id userid password
where id is the server ID and userid and password are for the WebSphere Application Server administrator (default is wpsadmin for both).

Whenever the IBM Tivoli License Compliance Manager agent is stopped, then WASAgentClient.{bat|sh} must be run again and the credentials must be reissued.

  3. To complete the enablement of the IBM Tivoli License Compliance Manager licensing feature for WebSphere Portal Express and IBM Workplace Web Content Management™ follow the IBM Tivoli License Compliance Manager instructions provided with your customer agreement.

  4. Optional: To troubleshoot problems encountered during enabling, check the following:

    1. Ensure that the correct inventory signature file exists in the directory path indicated in the table below.

The required signature file is available on its product installation CD.

Product offering / Component name IBM Tivoli License Manager signature file Signature file's directory path
IBM WebSphere® Portal Express (all editions) ILQS0800.SYS2

      • Windows:

        was_profile_root\installedApps\nodename\documents.ear\pdm.war\TIVREADY

      • Linux:

        was_profile_root/installedApps/nodename/documents.ear/pdm.war/TIVREADY

      • i5/OS: the UserData path of directory portal_server_root_user/installedApps/nodename/documents.ear/pdm.war/TIVREADY

    2. Verify that the itlm.product file exists in your operating system's directory:

WebSphere Portal Express creates this file during installation.

    3. WebSphere Application Server security must be enabled for WebSphere Portal Express

    4. Verify that the WebSphere Portal Express installation updated the .ITLMRegistry file in the user_home directory to contain the WebSphere Portal Express installation directory path.
IBM Tivoli License Compliance Manager is now installed and enabled.
