Users, tasks, and tools

Consider the tasks that users might perform and the tools that are available to them when they work with policies for portal resources.

The following table summarizes, for each type of user, the tasks performed and the tools used in creating, customizing, deploying, and managing policies for portal resources.

Application Developers and Data Integrators or System Administrators

  • Work with designers to determine modifications and extensions to the policy settings for various target objects.

  • Define new/customized policy settings (the policy value sets) for the portal deployers.

  • Use the Resource Policies portlet and the Resource Permissions portlet to obtain the policy value sets for various resources and the user role assignments for policy access.

  • Write the application or daemon that responds to or interprets the policy settings (policy value sets) for the specified target objects.

Deployers

  • Install and configure Resource Policies and policy definitions that need to be deployed with IBM® WebSphere® Portal Express , IBM WebSphere Application Server, or other application that uses policy-based management of its resources.

  • XML configuration interface to define policy types, the policy value sets for target objects, including data types and the default values, and load the policy definitions into the content management repository.

  • Personalization Editor to create policy rules and export the rules files for staged deployment, for example, from test and pilot servers to production systems, including network deployments.

  • Personalization Editor to import policy rules that have been created on other servers and exported for use on the servers hosting the current deployment.

Administrators

  • Manage the main policies for portal resources.

  • Refine policies by creating and customizing child policies and maintaining the policy settings of portal resources.

  • Resource Policies portlet or the XML configuration interface.

  • Policy editors for specific resources.

  • Personalization Navigator to find and associate rules with policies.

  • Personalization Editor to create and edit rules for policies, including creating and editing the conditions available for use in rules.

Application Managers

  • Manage policies and policy rules for the applications that they own.

  • Resource Policies portlet and the policy editors for applications owned.

  • Personalization Navigator and Personalization Editor for working with policy rules.

Business and Community Users Use personal and team applications, clients, and work site pages that apply the policies that control how these resources function.
