About the Lotus Sametime server
A Lotus Sametime server is an IBM Lotus Domino® server that has the Lotus Sametime server software installed and set up on it.Because IBM WebSphere® Portal Express is compatible with several releases of Lotus Sametime server software, this topic contains no step-by-step procedures for installation. Instead, you can follow the links below to locate the correct procedure for your platform and for the release of Lotus Sametime you intend to install. Documentation for specific releases and platforms is available over the Internet on the IBM Web site, for download and/or browsing. For information on the releases of Lotus Sametime supported for use with WebSphere Portal Express, see Supported hardware and software. Refer to the requirements for the relevant release of WebSphere Portal Express, and then see the Software for collaboration section.
In this release of WebSphere Portal Express, Lotus Sametime release 7.5 is the latest supported release.
The installation documentation covers the following basic tasks you perform to complete a Lotus Sametime server before you begin to integrate it with your site:
- Install and set up the prerequisite underlying Lotus Domino server and its Lotus Domino Administrator client software. For more information, see Lotus Domino server installation and server setup reference
- Install the Lotus Sametime server software.

Critical choices for Lotus Sametime in a WebSphere Portal Express site
The following table lists choices common to Lotus Sametime installation on most or all platforms, with recommendations for use of Lotus Sametime with WebSphere Portal Express. Because specific installation steps differ between platforms, the descriptions of the choices are general; do not expect to see the exact wording of the choice when installing for your platform and release. You can choose Domino Directory (this selection is known as "native") or an LDAP server (which can be either a separate Domino LDAP server or other non-Lotus Domino LDAP server) as the repository for user authentication and management.
