IBM Sales Center Quick Install

For simple deployment, IBM provides a Quick Install package that installs the complete Websphere Commerce Sales Center client and the full Websphere Everyplace Deployment for Windows and Linux runtime onto a single machine. Quick Install has a GUI based installer packaged on a single DVD, and supports manual installation. It is appropriate for irregular and occasional installation, include installing for evaluation purposes and, generally, ad-hoc installation and uninstallation.

Quick Install is not appropriate if do the following:

  1. Manually install only a subset of WED4WL. The WED4WL installer provides flexibility that the Sales Center Quick Install does not expose. You can initially install a minimal WED4WL and then add optional features later. See the Installation instructions in the WED4WL System Administrators Guide for more information. Sales Center requires the WED4WL International Components for Unicode for Java (ICU4J) optional feature, which must be installed before Sales Center can be added.

  2. Install WED4WL with the Enterprise Management Agent enabled. This component allows the client to be managed by a Tivoli Device Management Server.

You can use WED4WL installer for this purposes. Subsequently add Sales Center using one of the post deployment provisioning mechanisms.

Sales Center Quick Install is also used by developers to install an instance of Sales Center for use with Rational Application Developer, complementing the Websphere Commerce Toolkit. The developer installs Sales Center and then configures RAD to use it as a target runtime in a workspace, and can then use that workspace to develop plugins that extend and customize Sales Center.

It is expected that Quick Install will be performed for production use only in very limited deployments or in difficult circumstances, for example to replace or rebuild a client on-site when the typical software deployment mechanisms are not available.

Quick Install does not include installing user customizations. As previously described, customizations should be built in the form of an Eclipse Update Site. Any of the post deployment provisioning mechanisms may then be used to install custom extensions to a Sales Center installed using Quick Install. If Quick Install was chosen to perform an ad-hoc install in the absence of a deployment infrastructure, then manual installation of customizations using the Eclipse update manager may be called for since that method also does not require installation servers or deployment infrastructure to be in place.
