(troubleshooting)
SSLException when sending outbound email messages
Problem(Abstract)
You notice WebSphere Commerce fails to send outbound email messages. You also see the following error:

[2/14/08 4:55:53:784 EST] 00000052 jcaemail E com.ibm.commerce.messaging.adapters.jcaemail.JCAEmailManagedConnection init() The following exception has occurred: Exception reading response;
nested exception is:
javax.net.ssl.SSLException: Unrecognized SSL message, plaintext connection?.
Symptom Outbound mail messages will not be sent Cause When setting up the email transport by way of WebSphere Commerce Admin Console, you are provided an option to enter a userId and password for the SMTP server. If this field is set, the communication with the SMTP server will take place by way of SSL. In such cases, the above error may be thrown if the userId and password is incorrect. Resolving the problem Verify that your SMTP server userId and password is setup properly. If your SMTP server does not require authentication, then ensure the userId and password fields are left blank.

There are several places where the userId and password can be defined for an email message. Check each of these to ensure the settings are correct:

  1. Log in to AdminConsole under Site. Go to Configuration -> Transport -> Email

  2. Log in to AdminConsole under Site. Go to Configuration -> Message Types -> your message type

  3. Repeat step 1) for your specific store.

  4. Repeat step 2) for your specific store.
