Install Personalization without WebSphere Portal
The WebSphere Portal Personalization component selects content for users, based on information in their profiles and on business rules.
By using Portal Personalization, business experts can classify site visitors into segments and then target relevant content to each segment. Personalization also includes analytics capabilities to record site usage patterns and the LikeMinds recommendation engine, which provides collaborative filtering capabilities.
Collaborative filtering uses statistical techniques to identify groups of users with similar interests or behaviors. Inferences can be made about what a particular user might be interested in, based on the interests of the other members of the group.
There are two ways to access the function that Personalization provides:
- Perform a full installation of WebSphere Portal. The WebSphere Portal product installs and configures Personalization 's function by default.
- Install the Personalization function in WebSphere Application Server, but without WebSphere Portal. When Personalization is installed in this way, it is referred to as the Personalization Server.

...without requiring that WebSphere Portal also be present on the machine. While rules may be executed from any WebSphere Application Server installation, a full WebSphere Portal installation is still required as a workspace for authoring rules and campaigns.
