About the Lotus Sametime server

A Lotus Sametime server is a IBM Lotus Domino server that has the Lotus Sametime server software installed and set up on it.

Because IBM WebSphere Portal is compatible with several releases of Lotus Sametime server software, this topic contains no step-by-step procedures for installation. Instead, we can follow the links in the tables below to locate the correct procedure for the platform and for the release of Lotus Sametime you intend to install. Documentation for specific releases and platforms is available over the Internet on the IBM Web site, for download and/or browsing. For information on the releases of Lotus Sametime supported for use with WebSphere Portal, see the Supported software for collaboration (optional) table under Software requirements in Supported hardware and software.

In WebSphere Portal 6.0, Lotus Sametime release 7.0 is the latest supported release. The installation documentation covers the following basic tasks you perform to complete a Lotus Sametime server before you begin to integrate it with the portal site:

Usage restrictions

You are authorized to install and use Domino Directory solely and exclusively in connection with the use of Lotus Sametime and IBM Lotus QuickPlace. Consult the product license for details.

Where to find installation procedures

The IBM Lotus Documentation Web site lists all documentation for all releases of Lotus Sametime.

The following table lists installation documentation pieces for the Lotus Sametime 7.0 release. The documentation Web site is subject to change, so if any of these pieces are unavailable, check the Sametime product pages for updates for the platform.

Platform Documentation Comments
Windows and UNIX Lotus Sametime 7.0 Installation Guide, especially the topic Install options in Chapter 3.

Lotus Sametime 7.0 Administration Guide, especially the topic Install Sametime on a Domino server in Chapter 1.

We can download files for these guides from the Lotus Sametime 7.0 documentation page.

Critical choices for Lotus Sametime in a portal site

The following table lists choices common to Lotus Sametime installation on most or all platforms, with recommendations for use of Lotus Sametime with the portal. Because specific installation steps differ between platforms, the descriptions of the choices are general; do not expect to see the exact wording of the choice when installing for the platform and release. The options highlighted in this table are a subset of all choices you make during installation; in general, if not specified, accept default options.

In addition to these choices, before installation, see Planning for collaborative servers and portlets, which describes several common types of collaborative portal sites, and includes considerations related to platform, user directories, security, and performance. In particular, the Security and Performance sections contain recommendations for using Lotus Sametime and Lotus QuickPlace together.

Be sure to keep a record of all names and passwords you specify, and all directories where the installation programs install software.

Setting up the Directory Type dialog box

We can choose Domino Directory (this selection is known as "native") or an LDAP server (which can be either a separate Domino LDAP server or other non- Lotus Domino LDAP server) as the repository for user authentication and management.

The people awareness features in the portal and the authentication features behave differently, depending on the directory you choose.

  • If you select Domino Directory, people awareness can display names in both the common name format and hierarchical name format within a portlet. Configuring Lotus Sametime to use the native Domino Directory allows the most flexibility for people awareness. By default, Lotus Sametime searches the native Domino Directory first for user names.

  • If you choose an LDAP server, Lotus Sametime installs a Directory Assistance database (da.nsf ). If directory assistance is used, multiple LDAP directories can be searched after Lotus Sametime queries the native Domino Directory. In addition, because Lotus Sametime searches the native Domino Directory first and external LDAP servers second, the Domino Directory on the Lotus Sametime server should contain only users that are for administering Lotus Sametime, not portal users.

The Directory Assistance feature is useful in environments where the same users will not be listed in both the LDAP directory and Domino Directory.

If the portal site uses IBM Tivoli Directory Server, another reverse proxy, or a load balancer, you may need to enable this option for Sametime.
Multi-server single sign-on authentication The Lotus Sametime installation program automatically enables this setting.
