Eclipse-based Development Environments

The following components comprise the WebSphere Portlet Factory development environment:

Factory Server -- Hosts the Factory and determines the Java compiler used by the Factory, security for the generated applications, user management, etc.

Factory installation -- Runs as a web application on an application server and includes the Factory servlet which generates portlets and other J2EE applications from models. The Factory installation also contains builders, models, profile sets, and other Factory artifacts.

Designer plugin -- Integrates code allowing you to create models, profile sets, builders with in an Integrated Development Environment (IDE).

IDE -- Hosts the Designer plugin and provides typical development environment features such as project management, compilation of Java source code, etc.

Depending upon which IDE is used to create a Factory model, the mechanism for launching the Designer and some cosmetic aspects of the Designer may vary but the model's functionality will not. In other words, models created using one IDE may be open and run in another.
