Information for installing Lotus Instant Messaging and Web Conferencing on UNIX and Windows

Review the following information:

Before you install Lotus Instant Messaging and Web Conferencing

Usage restrictions apply for the copy of Lotus Instant Messaging and Web Conferencing that is shipped with some editions of WebSphere Portal. For example, some capabilities of Lotus Instant Messaging and Web Conferencing are not licensed for use. Consult the product license for details.

  • Read the planning information

Refer to Plan for collaboration for information.

  • Read the Release Notes

Check the WebSphere Portal Release Notes for any late-breaking information about installing Lotus Instant Messaging and Web Conferencing.

  • Read additional information about using Domino Directory or LDAP with Lotus Instant Messaging and Web Conferencing

During the Lotus Instant Messaging and Web Conferencing installation, you can choose between Domino Directory (native Domino Directory) or an LDAP server (a separate Domino LDAP server or other LDAP server) as the repository for user authentication and management. The people awareness features in the portal and the authentication features behave differently, depending on the directory you choose:

    • If you choose Domino Directory, people awareness can display names in both the common name format and canonical name format within a portlet. Configuring Lotus Instant Messaging and Web Conferencing to use the native Domino Directory allows the most flexibility for people awareness. By default, Lotus Instant Messaging and Web Conferencing searches the native Domino Directory first for user names.
    • If you choose an LDAP server, Lotus Instant Messaging and Web Conferencing installs a directory assistance database (da.nsf). If directory assistance is used, multiple LDAP directories can be searched after Lotus Instant Messaging and Web Conferencing queries the native Domino Directory. In addition, because Lotus Instant Messaging and Web Conferencing searches the native Domino Directory first and external LDAP servers second, the Domino Directory on the Lotus Instant Messaging and Web Conferencing server should only contain users that are for administering Lotus Instant Messaging and Web Conferencing, and not portal users.

The use of directory assistance is useful in environments where the same users will not be listed in both the LDAP directory and Domino Directory.

See the Lotus Instant Messaging and Web Conferencing Administrator's Guide for details on using Domino Directories and LDAP directories with Lotus Instant Messaging and Web Conferencing. Refer to Locating additional information for Lotus Instant Messaging and Web Conferencing for more information.

  • Before you install Lotus Instant Messaging and Web Conferencing for use with Lotus Team Workplace

The following information is specific for using Lotus Instant Messaging and Web Conferencing with Lotus Team Workplace.

    • If you will use Lotus Instant Messaging and Web Conferencing and Lotus Team Workplace together, install these servers on separate machines to maintain acceptable performance.
    • A good practice to enable Lotus Instant Messaging and Web Conferencing and Lotus Team Workplace to work together, is to configure both servers to use the same LDAP directory. In addition, set up multi-server single sign-on authentication on both the Lotus Instant Messaging and Web Conferencing server and Lotus Team Workplace server.
    • If you enable SSL on one of the servers, also enable it on the other server.

  • Refer to optional configuration information

Optional configuration information for Lotus Instant Messaging and Web Conferencing is included in the topic, Advanced configurations for Collaborative Services.
