Global Settings portlet

 

Overview

Use the Global Settings portlet to configure some settings which apply throughout the portal. You can perform the following tasks with the Global Settings portlet:

 

Specify the default portal language

Use the Default portal language drop-down list to select the default language in which you would like the portals to appear.

 

Specify what users see when they log in to the portal

Select one of the following options:

  • Will always be the user's default page (portal session will not resume)

    Choose this option if you want users to always return to the default page after log in.

  • Will be the page the user most recently visited (portal session will resume)

    Choose this option if you want users to return to the page from their last visit. This option is helpful when users lose their portal session in the middle of a task and need to login to return.

  • Will be dependent upon the choice the user makes at log in

    Choose this option to let users determine the initial view by their choice after log in.

 

Specify the search engine that opens when users select Find

Use this option to specify which search engine users use when they want to find information. This option has an entry field Use this URL for "Find:". In the entry field type the URL for the search engine which you want to open when a user selects Find. Shut down and restart the portal. The portal now displays a Find: button in the theme action bar of user pages such as My Portal.

If you use themes that are not packaged with WebSphere Portal, modify these themes to make the Find function available. To do this, include the <wps:find> tag in your theme.

 

Specify the transcoding option

Specify the Transcoding option to enable transcoding of portlet content. If you select this option, portlets can take advantage of the transcoding capability of WebSphere Portal. The Transcoding Technology makes Web-based information available to users of hand held and other pervasive devices. Transcoding can tailor the portlet content for the requesting device in various ways. This includes:

  • Converting the output to a different markup language for example from HTML to WML.
  • Performing deck fragmentation for devices that use WML
  • Converting images to a different format, for example GIF to WBMP.

To enable transcoding of portlet content, click the check box Enable transcoding of portlet content.
