WebSphere Web Content Management v5.1 Features
Overview
Web Content Management (WCM) comes with a set of tools to manage the creation, approval and publication of Web content:
Authoring Templates
Authoring Templates are used to store a set of default values to be used when creating new Content. Authoring Templates, in partnership with Presentation Templates, help ensure that Content has a consistent look and feel.
Workflow and Security
WCM technology overlays a set of controls on the elements that make up a web site. These control user access to the different elements of a site and manage an approval process for each item that is created.
Scheduled Publishing and Expiring
WCM items can be published and expired on the "live" site using defined dates and times.
Authoring Environments
Dreamweaver enhancements are supplied with a WCM solution to allow users to create certain WCM items in Dreamweaver, and then import them into a Web Content Management solution.HTML can also be generated in other programs and imported into WCM items, or HTML can be written directly in the WCM Authoring Portlet (Web Content Authoring).
Dynamic Presentation
The WCM application generates web pages dynamically. This means the content displayed on a web page will change depending on how items are profiled, and on different parameters. WCM's dynamic presentation includes the following features:
Componentization The segregation of the different elements of a web site into separate items. This allows different people with specialist skills to take responsibility for different elements of a web site. Component and Content Sharing WCM items can be used repeatedly in a web site. This reduces the time taken to build a Site, and ensures that a Site has a consistent look and feel. Profiling Profiling allows WCM items to be grouped and categorized, enabling the generation of page elements such as menus. Site Navigation The WCM application automatically generates the links between the different pages in a site. These links are called Menus and Navigators. They are based on the parameters set in the different items that make up a web page. Presentation Templates Presentation Templates provide a flexible way to design the look of a page, as well as providing consistency across pages. They allow you to change the look of a group of pages without having to update the content of each page. E.g., a Presentation Template that displays a Menu on the left side of a page can be changed to place it on the right without having to rebuild the Menu. All web pages based on the same Presentation Template will be changed. Pre-rendering An entire Web Content Management site can be pre-rendered as HTML that can then be used as the "live" site. This option can dramatically improve the performance of your live site. Updates to the Pre-rendered Site can be scheduled as often as required.
Other Features
Authoring Portlet (Web Content Authoring) WCM technology is not installed on user terminals. WCM technology has a portal-based user interface. Users with a valid login can access the interface via an Intranet, or from anywhere in the world via the Internet (if your server allows remote access). Data Storage WCM data is stored within JDBC databases such as Cloudscape and DB2 for easy retrieval and back-up. IBM Workplace WCM includes a set of Modules that can be used to do the following:
Parent topic: Overview.
Performance and Caching IBM Workplace WCM:
- Provides multiple mechanisms for caching information allowing fast retrieval by subsequent requests.
- Supports caching of content components retrieved from disparate systems and data sources on an application-wide level.
- Also supports the caching of personalized content uniquely tailored for individuals on a user session level.
- Provides flexible cache strategies for managing the cache, allowing the easy configuration of storage and expiration attributes for individual content components.
Integration of Content from Disparate Systems The Web Module:
- Connects to various systems and information sources including SQL databases such as DB2 and Oracle, XML repositories, web applications, application components and other web sites.
- Provides just-in-time parsing of HTML/XML data.
- Retrieves and integrates content from various information sources, and can embed multiple content components such as web pages within another web page.
Presentation and Delivery of Aggregated Content The Data Formatter Module:
- Allows HTML templates to be specified for presenting (or wrapping) aggregated content, enforcing a consistent look and feel and ensuring navigational consistency.
- Merges the resulting content, integrated from various sources, within a separate presentation layer.
- Provides multiple delivery mechanisms allowing the final merged content to be displayed appropriately for the web browser, WAP phone or other viewing device.
