Document Manager Component

Overview

The Document Manager Component is used to retrieve WebSphere Portal Document Manager documents and display them as Web Content Management Components.

To use the Document Manager Component, a document must first be created in WebSphere Portal's Document Manager. Web Content Management cannot be used to edit Document Manager documents. See the Managing documents section of the WebSphere Portal Information Center for further information on Document Management in WebSphere Portal.

Document Manager documents can be rendered within a Web Content Management page as written, converted to another file type before being rendered, or displayed as a link. Certain attributes of a Document Manager document can also be displayed within a Web Content Management page.

Referencing Document Manager Documents

Document Manager documents can only be referenced from the same WebSphere Portal server that Web Content Management was installed on.

Referencing Document Manager content using a Personalization rule or content spot

If you use a Personalization Component Tag to reference Document Manager content displayed in a Personalization rule or content spot, you will only be able to retrieve attributes about the document. To display the document itself use a Document Manager Component tag with type="personalization"

Workflows

The Workflow features in Document Manager and Web Content Management are completely independent. You should use the Document Manager Workflow to approve the design and content of your Document Manager document, and then use the Web Content Management Workflow to approve the publication of the Document Manager document on your Web Site (if required).

Access Controls

When creating a Document Manager Component, a User will only be able to select those Document Manager documents that they have access to in Document Manager. Users must also have access to:

  • The Document Manager root. This is set in Portal Admin Console: Resource Permissions -> Virtual Resources -> ICM_CONTENT_REPOSITORY

  • The specific Document Manager library they wish to select a document from in the Document Management Libraries portlet.

The Document Manager document selected in the Document Manager Component will only be rendered if the User viewing the Web Content Management page has access to the Document Manager document in Document Manager.
