Adding a subsite to a Web site

Add a subsite to your Web site structure if you have two Web sites that have different goals but need to have the same design elements.

For example you may have one company with two divisions each with their own Web sites. Each Web site has different goals and will be maintained separately; however you want the sites to have a cohesive design.

You will need to have two Web projects to contain the files for the Web sites, but you can maintain just one site structure. Instead of setting up two separate Web sites to manage in Web Site Navigation (one for each Web project), you can simply add a subsite to an existing Web site structure in the Navigation page. Once you have added the subsite, Web Site Navigation will display something like the following:

To add a subsite to your Web site structure:

  1. Expand your Web project and double-click Web Site Navigation in the Project Navigator to open Web Site Navigation.

  2. Right-click the page icon where you want the second project to be attached.

    1. If the second project already exists:

      1. Select

Add existing project from the pop-up menu. Depending on the type of relationship the subsite has to the page, select Before, After, or As Child.

      2. In the Select Project window select the existing project that you want to add as a subsite and click OK; the subsite is added to the Navigation view.

    2. If the second project has not yet been created:

      1. Select Add new project from the pop-up menu. Depending on the type of relationship the subsite has to the page, select Before, After, or As Child.

      2. Double-click the icon to launch the New Web Project wizard.

      3. Complete the wizard to populate the second Web project.
In the subsite's Web Site Navigation, a project icon is added as the top page of the Web site.

Now you can edit and manage the combined site as you would manage a single Web site.
