Starting an MFT agent

Before we can use a Managed File Transfer agent for a file transfer, we must first start the agent.

About this task

We can start a Managed File Transfer Agent from the command line. In this case, the agent process stops when you log off the system.

On UNIX, Linux, and Windows, we can configure an agent so that it continues running when you log off from the system and can continue to receive file transfers.

On z/OS, we can configure the agent to start as a started task from JCL without the need for an interactive session.

Note that, if an agent encounters an unrecoverable error when it is running, a first failure data capture (FDC) is generated and the agent is stopped.

Procedure

  • Starting an MFT agent as a Windows service
We can start an agent as a Windows service so that when you log off Windows, your agent continues running and can receive file transfers.
  • Starting an MFT agent at UNIX and Linux system startup
A Managed File Transfer Agent can be configured to start at system startup on UNIX. When you log off a UNIX system your agent continues running and can receive file transfers.
  • Starting an MFT agent on z/OS
On z/OS, in addition to running the fteStartAgent command from a UNIX System Services session, we can start an agent as a started task from JCL without the need for an interactive session.
