Back up and restore Installation Manager
We can back up Installation Manager using operating system functions, or using a backup tool.The backup and restore steps apply only to Installation Manager.
These steps do not apply to installed packages. To back up and restore a package, see the documentation for the package.
Backing up Installation Manager
Procedure
Create the backups of the directories at the same time to keep the directories synchronized for the restore process.
Create a copy of these directories:
- Agent data directory
For information about the default locations of the agent data directory, see Agent data location.
- Shared resources directory
To determine the shared resources directory and for information about listing the installed packages:
- Installation Manager installation directory
To determine the installation directory for Installation Manager, complete one of these procedures:
- View the properties of the Installation Manager shortcut on our computer.
- Use the -verbose option with the listInstalledPackages command, see List installed packages using the imcl command.
- On Windows, click Start > [All] Programs > IBM Installation Manager > View Installed Packages.

Restoring Installation Manager
If the agent data directory or the shared resources directory is corrupted, and we do not have a backup copy of these directories, then we cannot restore Installation Manager. We must manually uninstall packages, delete the agent data directory, and install Installation Manager. For information about the manual uninstall process for a package, see the documentation for the package.
Procedure
- Restore the backup copy of these directories:
- Agent data directory
- Shared resources directory
- Installation Manager installation directory
- Optional: Install Installation Manager if there is an issue with one of these items:
- Installation Manager installation directory
- Installation Manager registry entries for Windows
- Installation Manager shortcuts
- Download the latest version of Installation Manager.
Go to the Installation Manager download links technical document and click the applicable download document link. The download document contains details about downloading the installation files.
- Run the installation command that is appropriate for your operating system and mode:
