Roadmap: Migrating from previous versions

Depending on the previous version of IBM BPM and its predecessor products you are migrating from, you have different methods of migration available to you. The roadmap identifies which migration methods are supported for each version of the product, as well as the high-level tasks that are required to complete that particular migration.

For migrating from V8.0 to V8.0.1, see Upgrading from IBM BPM V8.0 to IBM BPM V8.0.1.

Migration method support and high-level tasks to complete each migration type for IBM BPM
Version you are migrating from Migration method High-level tasks to complete migration Additional notes
IBM BPM Advanced V7.5 or V7.5.1 Artifact migration with a new database
  1. Install IBM BPM V8.0.1 and configure new topology.
  2. Export and import the process applications from IBM BPM Advanced V7.5 or V7.5.1.
  3. Connect to the Process Center from Integration Designer and begin working with your imported process applications.
  4. Update the applications. At this time, you can take advantage of any newer features added since the previous version.
  5. Create a new snapshot for your process applications. Unit test and install the new process applications on the Process Server.
Both Process Server applications and process applications can use the new features.
Application migration with a new database
  1. Install IBM BPM V8.0.1 and configure new topology.
  2. Install the Process Server applications from IBM BPM Advanced V7.5 or V7.5.1 using the administrative console.
  3. Export and import the process applications from IBM BPM Advanced V7.5 or V7.5.1.
The EAR files installed using administrative console will not be able to use the new features of IBM BPM V8.0.1.
Runtime migration
  1. Install IBM BPM V8.0.1.
  2. Use the provided migration tools to migrate configuration and applications, and update the existing database.
IBM provides tools to migrate applications and configuration as well as to upgrade existing databases.
IBM BPM Standard V7.5 or V7.5.1 Artifact migration with a new database
  1. Install IBM BPM V8.0.1 and configure new topology.
  2. Export and import the process applications from IBM BPM Standard V7.5 or V7.5.1.
  3. Update the applications. At this time, you can take advantage of any newer features added since the previous version.
  4. Create a new snapshot for your process applications. Unit test and install the new process applications on the Process Server.
The migrated process applications can take advantage of new features of IBM BPM V8.0.1.

IBM provides tools to apply customizations from IBM BPM Standard V7.5 or V7.5.1 and for upgrading the database.

When configuring Process Server and the Performance Data Warehouse, use the previous database credentials.

Application migration with a new database
  1. Install IBM BPM V8.0.1 and configure new topology.
  2. Export and import applications from IBM BPM Standard V7.5 or V7.5.1.
The final result is similar to using IBM BPM V8.0.1, with the exception that the process applications were created in the previous version and imported instead of being created using the V8.0.1 authoring environment.
WebSphere Process Server V7.0.0.x or V6.2.x Artifact migration with a new database
  1. Install IBM BPM V8.0.1 and configure new topology.
  2. Import your previous workspace into Integration Designer.
  3. Update the applications. At this time, you can take advantage of any newer features added since the previous version.
  4. Install the updated EAR files and new snapshots to IBM BPM V8.0.1.
Both Process Server applications and process applications can use the new features.
Application migration with a new database
  1. Install IBM BPM V8.0.1 and configure new topology.
  2. Install the Process Server applications from WebSphere Process Server V7.0.0.x using the administrative console.
The EAR files installed using administrative console will not be able to use the new features of IBM BPM V8.0.1.
Runtime migration
  1. Install IBM BPM V8.0.1.
  2. Use the provided migration tools to migrate configuration and applications, and update the existing database.
